Biography

“the most refreshing, exciting and frighteningly talented artist I’ve seen in some years”
Greg Champion, ABC

“Australia’s next queen of Country Soul”
Rolling Stone

“Whenever we play her music on ABC radio, it garners an instant response: ‘Who was that singer?'”
Richard Glover, ABC Sydney

Based in country Victoria, Kimber has been quietly stealing hearts on Australia’s live music scene for the past eight years. It was in 2008 that she really found her niche by forming alt-country band Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel (with older sister Beth Kimber on keys and accordian, and long time friend Cat Leahy on drums). With a familiar, warm and expressive voice – sometimes yearning, sometimes sensual, always believable, Sal and her band were named by Rolling Stone Magazine as ‘Australiana alt-country at its finest’.

With consistent rural and national touring, Sal Kimber and the Rollin’ Wheel released their highly anticipated self-titled album in 2011, to warm acclaim. Produced by award winning producer Shane Omara’, the album received national and international radio play, featured on shows such as Packed to the Rafters, and amongst dongs received Rhythms Magazines ‘Readers choice album of the year’.

Originally hailing from the mountain valleys of rural Victoria, Sal Kimber grew up in a musical family, and discovered her passion for songwriting at an early age. Her unique style has captured a strong following and garnered awards including the Victorian Female Vocalist of the Year Award at the Victorian ∓ National Country Music Awards (2010) and the Apra Song of the Year at the Victoria ∓ National Country Music Awards (2012).

Inspiring both the tapping of toes and the tugging of heartsrings, Sal performs solo, duo and trio, but most comfortably and most frequnetly with her talented five piece band ‘The Rollin Wheel’. Most recently Sal has been a guest on SBS TV show Rockwiz, toured Canada and Nashville, and has supported the likes of Kasey Chambers and The Waifs.

Sal and her Wheels released their first single off their upcoming new album in June 2015, ‘Stumble in the Dark’, a haunting and authentic indie folk offering, the band sets to release their long anticipated full album in early 2016.

NEW SINGLE RELEASE, VID CLIP & TOUR

Today is the official release day for our new single STUMBLE IN THE DARK! You can get a copy of the song via iTunes – click here.

We’ve also made a video clip with the wonderful Agostino Soldati. We had a very adventurous day and night of recording at a friend’s bush shack near Bells Beach, Victoria. The shack had no electricity, so we used candles and 50 year old hurricane lanterns to light our way. Hope you like it!

Our single launch tour kicks off in a few weeks – we’re looking forward to hitting the road together, it has been a while between tours… and we hope see you out on the road! (And if we’re not visiting your town this time around, we hope to see you for our album tour later in the year!)

Big love,
Sal, Cat, Buff and the Rollin’ Wheel team

Stumble In The Dark Single Release Tour Announced

The Brand New Single Released May 15-5

Hey there lovely crew,

We are super excited to announce that our new single STUMBLE IN THE DARK will soon be released to the world! Almost 4 years since our last release, it feels rather big. Buffy and I wrote the tune late last year in our friend’s little seaside shack. After such a long time between releases we wanted to share a taste from the new album that was a lot more intimate than the upbeat rockers you might be used to. We hope you dig it!

You can hear a sneaky peak exclusively at The Music now!

The digital single will be available on iTunes and other platforms on Friday 15 May – keep an eye on our Facebook for more details.

To celebrate the release, we’re hitting the road in June with a FULL BAND tour. Hope we see you on the road!

Big love,
Sal, Buffy, Cat and the Rollin’ Wheel team

how time flies

Gosh, autumn, how did you get here so fast?! Last night I was back at Yikesville, rugged up in a hoodie and scarf, putting some finishing touches on our soon to be released single. It has been a slow burner, making this album, but we reckon it will be worth the wait.

We will be announcing some winter Aussie touring dates and some other exciting news soon… but for now- here are the details for our next stage appearance @ Kidgeeridge festival, South Coast of NSW

nesting and making da new album

I have just returned from a sunset run down to the Woolshed falls, Beechworth. Between shows on the road, and some work in Melbourne, this little big town is my steady, my home. Tho a country tourist stop of sorts, it’s constant characters are warm and unassuming. The small green grocer sells freshly baked sourdough bread and my favourite local apple juice

I do love the physical journey that music has taken me and the band, over the years. I feel blessed to travel so far and to places at times so unexpected, unknown. In the last month we have swung from big old trees in the Kangaroo Valley, backstroked across the salty Brunswick Heads river in northern NSW and slept in swags under stars at  Wollangarra.

swinging in trees

Between shows and day jobs, we have been chipping away in the YIKESVILLE STUDIO, creating our new album. We can’t wait to share the new sounds and stories with our friends once it is ready to roll, it feels like it has been a little while coming, I guess some albums just have their way.

Next week we support one our all time fav bands: The Waifs at the Corner Hotel and then travel up to one of our all time favourite festivals:FRL. You will find me either on stage or covered in salt running the fundraiser potato twist stall for Mittagundi (www.mittagundi.org.au)

A few new festivals and dates to share soon. Keep your eye on dis space….

big love, Sal

North American adventure

Hi there,

Sal here. I am writing from a comfy bed in south east LA. It’s balmy here this morning. Yesterday I swapped my cowgirl boots for a pair of rollerblades, and my woollen beanie for a straw sun hat. the coming month I will be road tripping with a friend of mine along the coast of California and Oregan, embarking on an actual holiday. it has been a long time between proper holidays, the last four years have seen me working as a full time youth worker in Melbourne town and gallivanting around Aus on weekends as a musician. My time for a bit more rest has arrived. A van equipped with kitchenette, bed, surfboards and a guitar. Sleep, waves, and new songs we will hunt 🙂

CANADA & NASHVILLE
August I will be doing a series of house concerts in the West of Canada. 12 shows from Vancouver to Manitoba and back via Kelowna. September I will be joining a beaut line up of Australian musicians at the annual Americana music conference/festival in Nashville. Keep your eye on the website for upcoming shows in Canada/Nashville and Australia

Big love,

Sal
